Team Fortress 2

“Team Fortress 2” is a multi-player, first-person shooter game. Developed and Published by Valve Corporation, “Team Fortress 2” was released in 2007. “Team Fortress 2” is the sequel to “Team Fortress,” which was a mod released in 1996 for the game, “Quake,” and the third game in the series. “Team Fortress Classic,” the second game in the series, was released in 1999. When first released, “Team Fortress 2” was available for Windows, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In 2011, the game became available free online for Windows, Mac and Linux via the “Steam” gaming platform.

The characters in the game are more cartoon-like caricatures and not completely realistic. The game consists of two teams which are composed of mercenaries. The mercenaries are hired by two feuding brothers. Each brother is trying to protect his company’s assets while trying to destroy the assets of the other. One team of mercenaries is RED, and the other team is BLU. RED stands for “Reliable Excavation & Demolition” and BLU stands for “Builders League United.”

The multi-player game is team based. Each team consists of a choice of nine distinctive character types. Each character type has unique strengths, weaknesses, and weapons which help in accomplishing team objectives. The character types include: scout, soldier, pyro, demo man, heavy weapons guy, engineer, medic, sniper, and spy. Each character has at least three weapons. These weapons are: a unique primary weapon, a unique secondary weapon, and a unique melee weapon.

The game consists of game modes like those found in other games. “Team Fortress 2” game modes include: capture the flag, control point, attack/defend, king of the hill, payload, and “Mann” versus machine. There are also alternate game modes, such as territory control, special delivery, payload race, arena, “Mannpower,” player destruction, and PASS time. There is also a training mode for first time players to practice their skills. Training mode involves wooden training dummies and an introduction on how to play a multi-player game. Inexperienced players can advance from fighting wooden dummies to fighting bots as a way to improve their skills.

“Team Fortress 2” originally had six official maps. Updates over the years have expanded the game to over 100 maps. Updates have also expanded choice of weapons, war paint, taunts, game modes, hats, and more. Originally, multiple-player team play on the Xbox 360 and PS3 only allowed for 16 players. Now, team play on Windows and Mac, via the Steam engine, allows for 32 players.

“Team Fortress 2” has won multiple awards since being released in 2007. These include: #4 Best PC Game of 2007, #1 Most Discussed PC Game of 2007, and #1 Most Shared PC Game of 2007, as well as 520 achievements on the Steam site.
